UCSB Give Day: Social Science

Department of Feminist Studies

Understanding and Changing Society

Dear Suzie,

By now you have probably heard all about our first-ever UCSB Give Day. We are thrilled to be part of such an exciting campuswide event. Undoubtedly, there are things you cherish about your time as a Feminist Studies student. Maybe it was a class you loved, the hands-on research you were involved in, a professor you really connected with, or late nights studying with friends. Give Day is about honoring those unforgettable memories by giving back.

Today, every gift, every amount, and every Gaucho makes a difference.

I want to highlight just a few reasons I’m proud to be a member of the UCSB Feminist Studies family:

  • Our scholars lead the field. Dr. Eileen Boris, the Hull Professor of Women’s Studies, currently heads the International Federation for Research in Women’s History where she has been instrumental in embracing the work of Spanish-speaking scholars from the Americas, Spain, and Africa.
  • LGBTQ Studies flourishes at UC Santa Barbara. Professor Jenn Tyburczy’s exhibition, “Irreverent: A Celebration of Censorship,” which she curated at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, was recently awarded the 2015 Allan Bérubé Prize for outstanding project in queer history.
  • The PhD program produces excellence. Our first doctoral graduate, Carly Thomsen, was awarded UC Santa Barbara’s Winifred and Louis Lancaster Dissertation Award for Social Sciences for her thesis, “Unbecoming: Visibility Politics and Queer Rurality.”
We could not continue our groundbreaking research without your support, and today we ask you to invest in the next generation of lucky UCSB scholars. We get most of our students for only a few crucial years, but we hope to influence them for a lifetime.

Sincerely,

Laury Oaks
Chair
