Call for Nominations: Paulette Poujol Oriol Undergraduate Global Feminist Research Award

This UCSB undergraduate student award is generously established by Claudine Michel, Professor of Black Studies and Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at UC Santa Barbara, in memory of her mother, Paulette Poujol Oriol. An award-winning author, actress, playwright, and activist, Poujol Oriol was a feminist leader who advocated for Haitian women’s rights in all of her work. She was a renaissance woman, having lived in France as a young child, later studying in Port-au-Prince and Jamaica and having fluency in French, Kreyòl, and Spanish with advanced knowledge of English, Italian and German. Poujol Oriol was a member and long-term president of the oldest women’s organization in the country, the Ligue Feminine D’Action Sociale (Women’s League for Social Action) founded in 1934 and a founding member of the umbrella organization for over 50 groups, L’Alliance des Femmes Haïtiennes (The Alliance of Haitian Women).

The purpose of this research award is to support undergraduate student travel to conduct research pertaining to issues of global feminism and social justice, specifically as it relates to communities of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and their Diasporas. Eligible students: Feminist Studies majors/minors and LGBTQ minors.

We will accept self-nominations and nominations from professors, TAs, and student affairs staff members. The nomination will use the form provided and give the student’s name, Perm number, and recommendation for support of a specific research travel plan. Allowable expenses include airfare, accommodations, and local transportation. Reimbursement will be provided only with original receipts. The award will be $500. Receipts are due within 4 weeks of the completion of research travel to the Feminist Studies Department.

The review committee will be comprised of the Chair of Feminist Studies and other appointed faculty members. Demonstrated academic achievement and feasibility of the student’s research plans are the primary criteria.

The nomination deadline is by 4pm on May 19th, and notification will be provided to awardees by May 23th. Awardees will be honored at the Feminist Studies Graduation and Honors Colloquium event. The nomination form should be submitted to Laury Oaks, Chair of Feminist Studies, at oaks@femst.ucsb.edu with the subject line Poujol Oriol Research Award.
